Farm Bill Update From NYFC (May 31, 2024)

From the National Young Farmers Coalition: Last week, the House Committee on Agriculture passed the first draft of Chairman Glenn “G.T.” Thompson’s Farm Bill, the Farm, Food, and National Security Act of 2024 (HR 8467), after a 13.5 hour hearing. The final vote was 33-21. Young Farmers opposed the bill, along with hundreds of other farm, food, and climate advocacy organizations, for failing to prioritize equitable farmland access, divesting from the nutrition assistance program millions of Americans depend on, and for striking climate provisions that assist farmers in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and preparing for extreme weather events.

Hundreds of you took action to tell House Agriculture Committee members to oppose the draft–thank you!

Despite the disappointing outcome, this vote was just a first step in the process of passing a final Farm Bill, and we will continue advocating for federal farm policy that addresses the needs of the new generation of farmers and ranchers.

Make sure you’re signed up for our Farm Bill Action network, and opt-in to text alerts, so we can keep you posted on Farm Bill updates and share opportunities to let Congress know your top priorities. We’re also excited to announce that everyone who signs up for the network or takes one of our actions will receive a complimentary one-year Young Farmers Community Membership!
